I am an interdisciplinary scientist working at the interface of Statistical Physics, Molecular Microbiology, Population Biology and Evolutionary Theory. My recent and current research program is dedicated to understanding how molecular-level stochasticity and biophysical constraints scale up to determine the fitness and heterogeneity in microbial populations. My broader scientific objective is to establish a quantitative framework linking single-cell biophysics with population and evolutionary dynamics. In doing so, I aim to bridge conceptual theory and practical application, providing the mechanistic insights necessary to address global challenges such as predicting and mitigating antimicrobial resistance.
Current Research Focus
Currently, I am a member of the Molecular Microbiology Group (AG Erhardt) at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. My primary work involves decoding the logic of bistable flagellar gene regulatory networks in Salmonella. By integrating high-resolution experimental data with predictive mathematical modeling, I investigate how cells manage the energetic and structural trade-offs inherent in the complex biological "machines" of flagella.
Academic & Personal Philosophy
I view biological systems as the result of a persistent tension between physical necessity and evolutionary forces. This "dual-force" perspective informs not only my research but also my approach to education and mentorship. I am committed to bridging the gap between the quantitative rigor of the physical and mathematical sciences and the functional complexity of biology.
Beyond the Labs...
Proudly, I am the father of two daughters. I enjoy spending time with them, as well as hiking, cycling, talking, writing, teaching about a variety of topics, and reflecting on the philosophy of science and the beautifully messy process of discovery. Whether I'm building models or simply playing with my kids, I believe that curiosity for truth and telling its story is a life-long pursuit.
